Dubai has once again proven its economic resilience by recording a remarkable 63% year-on-year growth in Trader Licences during the first half of the year, despite the challenging global climate. According to Dubai Economy, 3,243 Trader Licences were issued in the first half of 2021, a significant increase from the 1,989 licences issued during the same period in the previous year. Since its inception in March 2017, Dubai Economy has issued a total of 13,430 licences, highlighting its ongoing commitment to supporting e-commerce in the emirate.

Atik Munshi, managing partner at Enterprise House, stated that the concept of the Trader Licence has been well received by start-ups and small businesses looking to establish themselves in Dubai. The DED Trader Licence, introduced by Dubai Economy’s Commercial Registration and Licensing (BRL) sector, allows freelancers and entrepreneurs to conduct business operations online and through social media platforms. This initiative aligns with Dubai Economy’s goal of driving digital transformation and promoting e-commerce, strengthening the emirate’s economic competitiveness.

According to the BRL sector’s report, men accounted for the majority (63%) of the DED Trader Licences issued in the first half of the year. The most popular business activities for these licences included ready-made clothing, women’s tailoring and design, handicraft workshops, gents’ tailoring and design, food preparation, commercial brokerage, exhibitions, and other professional services.

Obtaining a DED Trader Licence is a straightforward process that can be completed online through the invest.dubai.ae portal. Dubai Economy aims to regulate and enhance e-commerce by offering a platform that facilitates trade and connects customers with traders. While licence holders cannot operate physical stores, they are eligible for up to three visas if they are 100% Emirati-owned and bear full legal responsibility for their business.

To further support DED Trader Licence holders, Dubai Economy has partnered with both government and private sector entities. These collaborations provide business facilities, enhance distribution channels, and strengthen connections with major retail hubs. As part of these efforts, Dubai Economy has partnered with noon.com to create ‘Mahali,’ a digital store that helps Emirati entrepreneurs expand their businesses online.

Additionally, Dubai Economy has collaborated with MyFatoorah to enable e-payments for DED Trader transactions, talabat to showcase and sell food products, and ‘Akshaak’ to feature DED Trader Licence holders’ products online free of charge. Other benefits of obtaining a DED Trader Licence include membership in the Dubai Chamber of Commerce for commercial activities, access to banking facilities, a Customs Client Code for import and export via dubaitrade.ae, temporary employment services, participation in exhibitions and training workshops, display opportunities at consumer sales points, and workspace provisions.

Through these initiatives, Dubai Economy continues to foster a thriving digital business environment, empowering entrepreneurs and small businesses to succeed in the competitive e-commerce landscape.
